DNR: remains were that of a bear

An officer for the South Carolina DNR says the remains found along a road near Salem yesterday were those of a bear—not a human being. Dispatchers received a call yesterday morning from a man who reported what he thought was a human hand along Shadberry Creek Road near the Burnt Tanyard Road. Investigators and Coroner Karl Addis responded. One remain, which resembled a human hand, was found on the road itself while additional remains, including that of a head, were found on the side of the road. Once those remains were confirmed by the DNR officer to be a bear, they were removed from the scene and all responding units cleared by the noon hour.
