February is tree-planting for downtown Walhalla

This is the month that a committee of volunteers in Walhalla will plant 41 trees inside the vegetated areas created by Streetscape.  The only thing holding back the plantings, according to Richard Harper, is an encroachment permit required from the South Carolina DOT.  Harper spoke last night at a meeting of the Partners for Progress, whose treasurer reported that, so far, more than $15 thousand dollars has been donated toward the cost of oak and maple trees that are to be planted in the medians and along the sidewalks over four blocks of Main Street—from Ann to Tugaloo.  Janet Neville, Partners for Progress treasurer, says contributions have come in from civic clubs, as well as $2,500 dollars donated by Hutch ‘N Son, the Streetscape general contractor.
