Governor wants Sheriffs to do more

Mike Crenshaw is one of South Carolina’s 46 county sheriffs to take the pledge.  The first-term sheriff is signifying his support—and that of his office—to Governor Nikki Haley’s quest to turn the tables on domestic violence.  Haley has created a statewide task force, with the end goal of turning the state’s counties into safe places for women who, for the most part, are the victims during domestic violence.  Crenshaw believes his office and Oconee County have made strides, such as a shelter where the abused may go to avoid their attackers.  But he admits there is more for Oconee to accomplish, such as the governor’s call for every county sheriff’s office to adopt an internal policy spelling out exactly how law enforcement responds to domestic violence calls.  Crenshaw also says he has met with the local organizers of a Green Dot bystander program that offers training to help individuals learn how to intervene in a situation to stop an instance of domestic and dating violence, child abuse and bullying.
