Jail exception hearing tonight

Sheriff Mike Crenshaw hopes the second time will be the charm! The Walhalla Board of Zoning Appeals tonight will sit in judgment of the worthiness of the county’s newest application to build the replacement jail—opposite the 36-year old jail on S. Church Street. The board two years ago denied the county a special exception to build the jail on another side of the existing LEC property. At that time, it cited the lack of parking. The board also heard from neighbors that a new jail in their midst would lower property values and create safety issues. Some of that opposition then is believed to have softened two years later. Tonight’s City Hall hearing begins at 6.
