Jail meeting inconclusive

A Walhalla participant in a meeting yesterday on Oconee’s jail project says he expects the city will receive a building permit application from the county within four to six weeks. And that meeting participant said Walhalla is “cautiously optimistic” zoning questions will be resolved. Yesterday’s meeting involving representatives of both city and county government was described to 96.3/WGOG NEWS as a meeting that lasted between 30 minutes and one hour. County Administrator Scott Moulder told us no decisions were reached. “We looked at the zoning ordinance and we looked at the new location. We want to make sure we are certain that we follow the zoning ordinance,.” Moulder said. A ruling by the Walhalla Board of Zoning Appeals two years ago denied the county’s attempt to build the jail on the south side of the Law Enforcement Center. The county has now switched locations to the north side.
