Jury returns guilty verdict

A 31-year old Seneca woman told the judge that the jury got it wrong. Shawn Ashley Barrett spoke after being found guilty yesterday in the Oconee General Sessions Court of driving under the influence. At one point during deliberations, the jury asked Judge Alex Macaulay to clarify what’s meant by “a reasonable doubt.” But it was not long after that that the jury returned with its verdict. Barrett had insisted during her trial that she was not driving the night of her arrest by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. It was her second DUI offense within a 10-year period. Macaulay ordered Barrett to jail for seven days and an $1,100 fine, plus assessments. Barrett gets credit for one day already served. Given a choice, Barrett elected to serve the six days on weekends beginning September 27.
