Officer-related shootings prompt federal legislation

New legislation would require states receiving federal money for law enforcement to properly document all relevant details surrounding officer-related shootings that result in casualties.  The bill is the work of Republican senators Tim Scott of South Carolina and Chuck Grassley of Iowa. States would be required to keep track of data points, including name, race, description of event, and overall circumstances that lead to a weapon discharged.  Failure to comply would subject states to a 10% reduction in federal grant money.  The legislation is named for Walter Scott, South Carolina native fatally shot by former North Charleston policeman Michael Slager in 2015.  Slager pleaded guilty to violating Scott’s civil rights.
