Planning commissioners ponder a name change

Once again, Oconee planning commissioners are wrestling with making rule changes to the county’s control free zoning district.  Their staff liaison, Josh Stephens, last night introduced the term of general use district as a potential replacement term for control free district, which takes in an estimated two-thirds of the county’s acreage.  Stephens requested that he be allowed to confer with David Root, the county attorney, for opinions on the best course including, as Stephens put it, “What zoning today says about grandfathering and how we are applying it.”  Last night’s discussions turned to the commission’s best strategy to help make change—whether the commission is better off recommending piecemeal or overhaul change.  Commissioner Bozo Richards told his colleagues that starting January 1, a new council goes into office with a new way of looking at things.
