Radon Awareness

The Surgeon General has proclaimed this week as Federal Radon Action week.  Health agencies throughout the United States are joining forces to promote awareness of the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers.  Radon is a naturally occurring invisible odorless radioactive gas.  One in 15 American homes contains a high level of the gas.  A recent Harvard University study ranked radon the #1 home hazard. According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, most of upstate South Carolina, including Oconee County, is Zone 2, which is moderate potential for in home radon.  Greenville County is Zone 1, which is highest potential.  South Carolinians are urged to test their homes for this invisible killer. Test kits are available at most home improvement stores, or you can obtain a free test kit by calling the South Carolina Radon hotline at 1-800-768-0362 .
