Recycling top priority for Oconee Solid Waste

A report from the Department of Health and Environmental Control shows Oconee one of only three South Carolina counties to exceed the state recycling goal of 40% in fiscal year 2013. DHEC’s Solid Waste Management Annual Report was released this week. Oconee Solid Waste staff and users of the manned convenience centers reduced the amount of municipal solid waste that would have gone to the landfill by more than 10% over previous years—saving landfill space and expense. In the 2013 year, Oconee brought in nearly $300 thousand in recycling revenues and diverted almost five million pounds of waste from landfills. Oconee’s top recycled products are cardboard and mixed paper. Increased recycling efforts are a top priority at the county’s annual strategic planning retreats.
