Shelter opens, food items collected for fire fighters

Working with others, the American Red Cross has opened a shelter in Pickens for families impacted by the Pinnacle Mountain fire.  The shelter is the East Pickens Baptist Church, 2244 Gentry Memorial Highway, Pickens.  Since that wildfire started, Red Cross and its partners have served more than 8,000 snacks and distributed nearly 1,500 relief items in support of the agencies responding to the fire. The Red Cross encourages anyone coming to a shelter to bring the following items for each member of their family: prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items. It’s also important not to forget special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, and other items for family members who have unique needs.  Walhalla Fire Department is collecting food items to serve as breakfast tomorrow morning for the Pinnacle Mountain fire fighters.  You are asked to donate milk, eggs, and bread and bring those items to the Walhalla Fire Department on N. Broad Street, and the fire fighters there will make sure the donations reach their fellow fire fighters at Pinnacle Mountain tomorrow morning.
