South Carolina records 11 human cases of West Nile virus

So far this year, 11 human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in South Carolina by the Department of Health and Environmental Control.  Of the 11, one of them–an Anderson County resident–died last month.  The virus has also been detected in one horse, 13 birds, and 75 mosquito samples.  Human cases have been confirmed in Anderson, Beaufort, Horry, Richland, Union, and York counties.  The risk of serious illness or death is low, but it’s important to control mosquito populations by spraying for adult mosquitos and by removing mosquito habitats such as standing water.
