Standoff near Walhalla comes to an end

Police say a standoff came to an end late Thursday evening at a home near Walhalla with the suspect being taken into protective custody.

Police were on the scene in the 500 block of Highlands Highway, north of Walhalla, where the man was holed up in his home threatening to harm himself. Police say shots were fired in the home Thursday afternoon, but the man was alone in the residence. No shots were fired at law enforcement. Police closed a portion of Highlands Highway as a precaution during the incident.

Sheriff Mike Crenshaw says the man was taken to the hospital for evaluation. No criminal charges will be filed. Sheriff Mike Crenshaw stated that the public was not in danger at any time. The Oconee Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Walhalla Police Department and the Anderson County Sheriff’s office.
