“The conspriacy theories that go on”

Two government agencies are trying to determine the extent of asbestos buried on the grounds of Seneca’s former Kellett Elementary School and who’s responsible for the health hazard.  The mayor and council were told last night Seneca has asked a private contractor for a proposal to remove the materials while DHEC is analyzing samples from the ground.  A handful of residents near the school went to City Hall last night to find out what the city is going to do.  At the request of Mayor Dan Alexander, Utilities Superintendent Bob Faires gave an explanation.  Faires said late last month DHEC informed the city that it is looking into the situation after receiving an anonymous complaint.  Faires said that he has questioned Light and Water employees to find out if any of them were responsible.  The anonymity of the complainant is of interest to city officials because they feel the source could be key to finding out who dumped the asbestos-suspect materials.  And if the materials were buried deliberately, City Administrator Greg Dietterick said, Seneca will pursue prosecution.  Seneca resident Bobby Laye, a former councilman, said someone should take responsibility.  “Cleanse your soul, come forth,” Laye urged during the public comment part of last night’s meeting.
