“There’s no better place in Walhalla”

The proposal to create “A Week of Christmas” on the Walhalla property commonly known as the Green was taken under advisement today by Darlene Greene, president of the Greater Walhalla Chamber of Commerce, following a presentation today by Paul Raines and other members of the religious community. Raines first took his idea to the Walhalla City Council to assemble a mass choir to sing Christmas hymns during five December nights leading to Christmas Day. But Raines was referred to the chamber, for it controls the use of the Green, at the corner of Main and N. Catherine streets. Raines, the son of a minister, says the Green has great appeal for its central downtown location and he would not be interested in conducting the Week of Christmas anywhere else. Raines and the other organizers will invite participation by all Walhalla and area churches, no matter the size, no matter the denomination. His presentation came during a chamber board of directors’ meeting this morning. Other than a few questions by chamber board members, no indication was given as to whether the request will be granted.
