Tigers, Paladins lose; Gamecocks struggle in Music City

At Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, quarterback Sean Maguire hung in with an up-and-down effort as starter Jameis Winston’s replacement and #1 Florida State escaped with a 23-17 overtime victory Saturday night over #22 Clemson. Winston was suspended for the game against Clemson after making “offensive and vulgar” comments earlier this week on campus.

At Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville, quarterback Dylan Thompson threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for another score as #14 South Carolina beat Vanderbilt 48-34 Saturday night for its third straight victory. But the Gamecocks fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter and didn’t put away a team playing the most freshmen in the country until the final minutes. Head Coach Steve Spurrier now has 202 Southeastern Conference wins, breaking a tie with Vince Dooley and putting him second only to Paul “Bear” Bryant (292).

At Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg, Jalen Simmons’ 3-yard touchdown run with 2:24 remaining ensured a 17-7 victory for South Carolina State over FCS-ranked Furman on Saturday night. Simmons’ score came after the Paladins had to punt from their own 18 and the Bulldogs’ Austin Smith returned it to the Furman 3.
