Trustee anxious for judge’s ruling

The Oconee school trustee who made the motion to close the county’s smallest high school awaits a judge’s ruling on a challenge to that action.  In an interview after last night’s open session of the school board, District Two’s Rosemary Bailes said it’s her hope and prayer that once Circuit Judge Cordell Maddox rules on Lynn Martin’s challenge to the Tamassee-Salem Middle/High School closing, the district will be able to move on with its duty to educate children.  We asked Bailes about a remark Darlene Chapman made during public comment in which the Tamassee-Salem supporter asserted that consideration to changing the name and mascot of Walhalla High was quashed by “prominent Walhalla people,” who she said objected.   Bailes said there have been misunderstandings, but she is heartened by Walhalla and Tamassee-Salem students have been working together compatibly toward the enrollment next year of Tamassee-Salem students into Walhalla schools.
