The murder trial of South African double amputee runner Oscar Pistorius, who became internationally famous when he competed in the 2012 London Olympics on high-tech blades, began Monday in Pretoria. The first witness was a neighbor who described hearing four gunshots and a woman’s, quote, “blood-curdling screams” early in the morning on Valentine’s Day last year, when Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, 29-year-old model and TV personality Reeva Steenkamp, in the bathroom of his home. Prosecutors contend that the 27-year-old Pistorius killed Steenkamp after an argument, but he says he killed her after mistaking her for an intruder, shooting her through a closed door in the bathroom. Early testimony Monday focused on whether the screams Burger heard were those of a terrified woman about to be killed, or Pistorius’ screams for help after realizing he’d shot Steenkamp. In shades of the O.J. Simpson murder trial, the court proceedings were broadcast on TV.
