TUESDAY SPORTS: HS Volleyball; Early receives SoCon honor; 11/02 gametimes set

*The West-Oak Warrior volleyball team defeated Seneca 3-2 Monday night. The scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25 and 15-10. Elsewhere, Daniel downed Walhalla 3-1. The Lady Lions remain in a tie with Wren for tops in Western AAA, as they prepare to face Seneca Wednesday. If the Lions win, a tiebreaker with Wren awaits.

*Furman plackekicker/punter Ray Early has been named Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Paladins’ 27-10 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday. Early, a senior from Darlington, converted two of three field goal attempts, including efforts from 50 and 32 yards.

*Clemson will be in the 3:30 PM time slot in two weeks when they face the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville. The game will be televised on ABC or ESPN.

*The South Carolina football team will host the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 12:21 p.m. on Saturday, November 2. The game will be televised by SEC TV, and it’ll be homecoming at Williams-Brice Stadium.

*QB Michael Scarnecchia (6-4 192) of Fleming Island, FL committed to South Carolina Sunday night becoming the quarterback for the Gamecocks’ 2014 class. Scarnecchia also had an offer from Alabama-Birmingham and was drawing interest from Syracuse, Arkansas State and some Ivy League schools. He is the Gamecocks’ 14th commitment for the 2014 class.

*The New York Giants defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 at home in Monday Night Football  to get their first win of the season after six losses. Giants quarterback Eli Manning was 23 of 39 for 200 yards with one touchdown pass, and Vikings QB Josh Freeman was 20 of 53 for 190 yards in his debut for Minnesota.

*The Atlanta Falcons expect to have running back Steven Jackson back this week when they visit the Arzona Cardinals. Jackson has missed the last four games with a hamstring injury.

*The Carolina Panthers have been awarded wide receiver Tavarres King off waivers from the Denver Broncos. King is a product of the University of Georgia. He played high school football at Habersham Central.

*The South Carolina baseball team will conclude fall scrimmages this week with the annual Garnet & Black World Series at Carolina Stadium. All three games are open to the public. Game one is set for Friday at 4 p.m. with the series continuing on Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrapping up on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

*Jim Leyland stepped down Monday as the manager of the Detroit Tigers, announcing his departure two days after Detroit was eliminated by the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series. The 68-year-old veteran manager led the Tigers for eight seasons, which included three division titles and two pennants. Leyland, who made his managerial debut in 1986 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, said in a news conference yesterday, “I’m not totally retiring today, I’m just not going to be in the dugout anymore.” Leyland told the Tigers in early September that he didn’t want to return as manager, but he expects to remain with the organization in some capacity.
