United Way forecasts strong future

Oconee United Way leaders concede 2016-17 was a difficult year.  But better times are seen going forward as United Way carries out its mission to empower individuals, families, and the community to thrive.  At times last year, United Way operated with only two employees.  But a third has now accepted employment and Lashauna Harrison, executive director, expects more help to arrive in the form of an intern from Clemson University.  In a county that numbers approximately 75 thousand or more population, United Way believes there can be greater giving to meet community needs.  Last year United Way raised $460 thousand. The goal this year is to raise $600 thousand.  By 2020, outgoing board chairman Thomas Ray, believes the organization can reach the mark of $1 million.  Barbara Wright is an example of a community resident who received help.  She walked into the office one day and asked if there were anyone there who could teach her to read.  Wright was hooked up with United Way treasurer John Palmer, who taught her reading.  And last night Wright read a short statement of gratitude to the membership.  In return, she was give a bouquet of flowers and a framed certificate of accomplishment.
