Oconee’s Mountain Lakes CVB plays host today to a pair of travel writers from Great Britain. Newspaper writers Bert Walsh and Matt Minshull are in Oconee County today through an arrangement with the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. And their local host, Ken Sloan of the Mountain Lakes CVB, takes Walsh and Minshull on a boat ride today on Lake Jocassee—a lake whose reputation was enhanced this year by a spread in a National Geographic publication. At a breakfast table, we spoke to Walsh, whose article is intended for the Sunday edition of a London newspaper. “My idea was to do a story on the Cherokee Scenic Highway because I’ve read about this. I though it was a change from Charleston and Myrtle Beach,” Walsh said. But the writer acknowledged that a travel writer can’t visit South Carolina without writing about those two coastal tourist meccas. And, so he is including Charleston and Myrtle Beach in his story. Yesterday the two visiting writers took a ride down Section Four of the Wild and Scenic Chattooga. And last week the CVB’s Sloan played a host to a writer from National Geographic planning a story on the river.
