What the teachers did on their in-service day

Dr. Mike Lucas, Oconee Superintendent of Education, acknowledges the controversy surrounding the switch to a common core of state standards in public education. On his blog Friday, Lucas said, “Much of the controversy has been political, and I was pleased that lots of CEOs from America’s corporations posted an advertisement in support of the transition in curriculum.” The group stated, “We support these new, tougher academic standards that are currently being rolled out in classrooms across the country. These standards will better prepare students for college and the workplace, something of critical importance to the nation’s employers. The changes now underway in America’s schools hold great promise for creating a more highly-skilled workforce that is better equipped to meet the needs of local, state and national economies.” During their in-service day Friday, Oconee’s teachers were to spend much of the time working on activities related to the transition.
